- Where do I start? Which class should I take first?
It depends on what you want to learn! When new to guns, we always recommend starting with the Essential Pistol Craft class, which is an introduction to handguns as a whole and basic handling. Another option would be to start with a Firearm Familiarization—if you already have a gun and only want to be comfortable with your weapon.
Once you have a sense of guns and handling, you could move on to either the Women’s Shooting class—which teaches how to align the gun with your physiology for ideal handling—or Handgun Competency which implements shooting technique. Both of these classes require you to have a basic understanding of how your weapon works and simple shooting technique.
Principles of Gun Defense is a more advanced class which requires solid handling and competency prior to taking the course.
Carry Permit classes cover basic safety and handling but are more focused on legal aspects of carrying a weapon. They can be taken at any time, independent of any other classes.
- Do you offer gun safety/hunter’s education classes?
No. Gun safety classes—which are required in order to obtain a hunting license in Minnesota—are offered through the MN Department of Natural Resources. You can find offerings of these classes here.
- How old do you have to be to take the class? Could you do a class for my kids?
For most of the gun training classes, you need to be at least 18 years old. With parental permission and observation, we will sometimes accept students as young as 14.
Carry Permit classes require you be at least 20 years old.
- Do I need my own gun? Should I get a gun first?
We provide training guns in a variety of models and calibers for every class! Oftentimes, if you don’t already have a gun, it is better to wait until after class to get one. Generally you’ll have a better idea of what you’re looking for after you’ve tried a number of guns and gotten a feel for your preferences.
- Can I bring my own gun? How much ammo do I need?
If you want to bring your own gun, you are absolutely welcome to do so! It’s always a good idea to bring one box of ammunition (50 rounds) when bringing your own firearm.
The Firearm Familiarization is the only class that requires you to bring your own gun.
- Do we shoot during class?
All of the gun classes have a live-fire section. The shooting will be done during class, within the time frame provided.
- Where do we do the shooting?
Shooting is typically performed on private property outside of the city limits. It is indoors, lit and heated, but is not a commercial gun range.
- Are you a gun range or do you just offer training?
We are not a commercial gun range. All live-fire exercises are done under the supervision of a licensed instructor during an authorized training course. If you are looking to shoot recreationally, we can recommend a number of excellent gun ranges in the area.
- Do you sell guns? How about ammunition?
Vixen is not an FFL, and we do not sell or trade firearms or ammunition. We can recommend a number of excellent stores that deal in guns when you’re ready to purchase.
